Sable Mine Protected Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC)

Sable APC

Introduction to the Sable APC

The Casspir mine-protected vehicle is undoubtedly one of the world leaders in its field and setting the standard on levels of mine protection. Originally developed for the rigorous conditions of Southern Africa where a very high mine threat was prevalent.

However due to the age of the Casspir and the various upgrades, certain spare parts was difficult to come by and some shortfalls could not be fixed during upgrades and remanufacturing. From there the decision to design and manufacture the Sable.

The Sable is able to protect its occupants against the effects of a triple TM-57 anti-tank mine blast (equivalent to 21 kg of TNT) under any wheel, or a double mine (14 kg of TNT) anywhere under the hull. Sable offers a high degree of field repair-ability after mine detonations.

Hull and Suspension of the Sable APC

The Sable hull consists of a welded all-steel monocoque capsule to which the highly-effective leaf-spring suspension is attached and within which the main automotive and other components and systems are housed. This design offers maximum protection to both occupants and main components and facilitates rapid field repair.

In standard APC configuration Sable has two pneumatically operated rear doors and a partially open roof with hatches above the driver and co-driver’s positions. A full armoured roof with hatches is available as an option. A variety of weapons can be mounted and firing ports below the armoured windows is an option.

Engine and Transmission of the Sable APC

Sable is equipped with a powerfulpowerful MWM or International engine. The powerful engine gives improved mobility, better sustained cruising speeds and improved fuel economy. A 5 speed automatic transmission with lock-up torque converter is delivering drive to all four wheels. The functional layout of the engine compartment facilitates ease of maintenance and repair.

Full pneumatic brakes, is supplied to give excellent braking capability.

Protection of the Sable APC

The Sable offers the same level of mine protection and field repair-ability as the Casspir.

Standard ballistic protection is against 7,62 x 54mm Soviet API (B7+). Higher ballistic protection and protection against the TMRP-6 self forming fragment mine are also available as options.

Mobility of the Sable APC

With a maximum speed of 110 km/h and excellent cross-country ability, Sable offers best mobility for a vehicle in this class and a versatility to enhance the capabilities of a variety of forces in different terrain types.

Interior of the Sable APC

The standard layout is with the commander and driver in the front and 12 passengers, 6 on each side facing each other. This may vary according to application and weapons fit.
